What Else Has Arrived

Three cheers for SEQUINS! Who doesn't love them some sequins? I consider them to be somewhat of a year-round, kind of classic yet preppy style--but there's something about sequins in the fall and winter. Maybe its the cool weather and the twinkly lights...either way, tis the season for sequins!

Speaking of them, let's get right to "What else has arrived"!

First off, I just got the Sequin Pencil Skirt. I'm thinking...Work Holiday Cocktail Party? Church on Christmas Eve?

And, one of the best basic sweaters. I am actually wearing it as I speak write right now. I'm probably going to order it in black too.

Also, on the topic of sequins and Holiday festivities, a friend of mine is hosting a Christmas Party early in December and all the ladies are going to probably be donning something sparkly. So...I've been hunting around...here are some things that are lovely...some totally un-affordable, but still dream-worthy.

What are your favorites?

Third Bedroom Pinspiration

David and I rent the cutest house in Columbia, SC. Seriously, we love the house. It is a 1930's bungalow in the Historic Heathwood area with lots of charming details. From talking with neighbors who have lived in the neighborhood forever, they said that David's and my house was the neighborhood builder's house, where he lived with his family. He designed and constructed most of the bungalows on our street, and evidently, ours is the best, because it was his family home. The rest of them are similar on the inside as far as layouts are concerned, but ours is unique, which I thought was cool. While in my opinion, the outside could use a little work (just your basic brick bungalow...nothing too great as far as curb appeal goes), the inside is what drew us in. That, and the backyard, which is perfect for our furry-child, Colonel Mustard.

While I want to do a full house tour eventually, one of the rooms that has been virtually untouched is our "third bedroom/office/junk-room/storage for boxes our parents made us get out of they're houses since we're adults now" room. My parents are probably reading this and thinking, "we got a LOT more you can take if you've got a spare room!" But alas...we've got other plans for that room.

While it did get a coat of paint...that's about all it's gotten. When we moved in (June 2011), Bedroom 3 as we'll call it, was a bright frat-boy Salmon color. It was an obvious "convert this room into a bedroom so we can charge more rent" type space, and we totally bought into it. We'd just come from a NYC apt that was really long and narrow...so space was all we wanted. And a dishwasher.

So whats the plan? A walk-in closet of course! (Carrie Bradshaw...eat your heart out.) Y'all might be thinking...a priest and a social worker/nonprofiteer (not to be confused with Mousketeer fellow children of the 80's) couldn't possibly have enough money to afford enough clothes to need a walk in closet ROOM?! And, you'd be right...but it isn't as much a space thing as a practicality thing.

Most days David and I are on different schedules...particularly Thursday-Sunday...so it's annoying for one of us (i.e. me) to try and get ready for work in the dark or with a dim light so I don't wake him up. And he has the same issue on Sundays especially when we heads to work way before I get up...

The brainstorming went something like this:

Me: Since it's hard for us to get ready in the dark sometimes, I had an idea.
My Inner Thoughts: "I really hope I can use some of those Pinterest Closet ideas I've pinned"
David: What's the idea?
Me: To clear the junk out of the third bedroom and turn it into like a...dressing room. Like a huge closet for BOTH of us...TO SHARE!! We can hang a long rack on one wall or....blah blah blah...
My Inner Thoughts: "please say yes...please say yes...."
David: Yeah, that'd be cool. Sounds like a good idea.
My Inner Thoughts: "THAT WAS EASY...commence pinning"
Me: Awesome! Let's get to Lowes and...blah blah blah...

So, this is what we're working on.

Since I can't find the OFFICIAL before shot...I took this one in the molding to at least show the color it used to be before we painted it (that pinkish color)

Guess some spots need to be touched up...eh heh heh...

But we painted it "Grey Squirrel" by Martha Stewart.  It was also the first room we painted...now we've done like 8, so we could have done a little touch up. We're a lot better painters now, I swear. Quit judging...

So here's the room now-and this is "after" the junk was cleared out I mind you.

So we've got a huge space to work with and at this point in my shopping career, I won't fill up this entire room. Yet. But we'll probably add some additional storage that's not permanent since we're renters and we want something we can take with us. We're smart like that.

But check out some of the cool "charming" things besides that amazing thick baseboard molding and the crown molding on top.

The Transom Windows above all the doors and the crystal/glass doorknobs are just a few sweet touches in this wonderful house of ours...that we rent. Stay tuned for the closet room update. I'm hoping to get some stuff I need either tomorrow b/c we're making a trip to Charlotte and could drop in Ikea...or I'll do some local closet shopping Sunday. Stay tuned.

Some of my closet inspiration to tide you over...(less about the decor, more about the closet units themselves)

                                                        loving the double racks above

Brass/gold bar going straight across with overhead storage

storage for shoes, bags, sweaters...could be inexpensive if done thoughfully

again, like the single bar with the overhead storage

this is actually sold as one unit (Martha again), so it's the most convenient.

Ps: If you're reading this blog for the Bible Challenge info--take my advice. Skip Leviticus. Well, don't if you're trying to read it all. Keep going, but just text David your questions.  Lots of laws about cloven animals and which ocean dwellers are acceptable to eat. I'm a vegetarian, so I say...fuhgettaboutit.

What's Arrived...

Confession: I have an online shopping problem. Ya see, my mom said, "hey, I need your Birthday and Christmas Lists", which she usually does this time of year. So I start continue my shopping online and compile a huge list for her. And then I see things that just can't wait. My thinking, "if I don't get any new clothes until December 25th, what could I possibly wear between now and then"? I've got holiday party invitations already on the fridge...so yeah, I continue shopping. Let me also say that I tend to buy some trends and mix with vintage-esque things, mixed with classics. So I have a wide variety of clothing tastes...as you can see by my Pinterest boards pertaining to clothes.

I have the privilege of a nicely-dressed office environment, where some of us seem to play fashion show daily...always showing off the latest and greatest of our online purchases. While two of my coworker friends in particular favor daily-deal sites like Rue La La and Ideeli, I tend to order straight from the source. Well...first through ebates, then to the source.

(if you're an online shopper, and you don't use Ebates, I suggest you try it out. You get usually like 2-20% cash back on your purchases, which is cool b/c you are gonna buy it anyways--if you're like me. They send you a check in the mail, so basically, yeah, you're being paid to shop).

So anyways, let's do a little "what's arrived" post to show you what just came in the mail.

Item 1 here is Urban Outfitters "Reformed by the Reformation" Dress--sale for $39.99, plus 2.5% back from Ebates (which is pocket change but its adds up). It's a super light material that will transition well year-round. Imagine with a long leopard coat like this one from Zara, or a cute little bow belt for the spring and summer.

Item 2 is Sparkle & Fade Floral Twill Pant--sale again for $29, plus 2.5% back. I mean, I think these are amazing and with a black top even a bright red top, yes. My wonderful husband might disagree b/c when I held them up with a huge smile, he kind of gave me that, "um...okay..." look that I love so much. At least they aren't for him, right?

Item 3 that I got in the mail didn't work for me, so I'm going to probably re-gift it to one of my sisters for xmas/bday since we all have winter birthdays. (Sorry, Mom). So, I can't post it til I give it away because I know my sister's are reading this blog...RIGHT?

I've already got another order that should be coming in today or tomorrow, so assuming they work out, they too will be shared.

About a Month In

Just checking in on progress. Indicated below is a little doc I made so I could look at how much I'd done so far, and what was left. Bad idea, right? Not much in red below...but considering I am just over a month in, I am still on track and still at it, so that's good. And I'm following the plan, which is so far, very manageable.  Favorite parts so far: I am enjoying the Psalms...because they're like songs and they read as such. (And many song lyrics coming from them--including most Camp Mikell songs). If you're friend of mine and reading this, can you believe this is the first time I've mentioned Camp Mikell? There I go again...maybe it needs its own post...

What else is going on? I went to bed early last night, did I miss anything big? No? Nothing major happened last night. Okay, then. Back to work :)

Election Day

Today is the day. What are people doing to watch the election results? Any good viewing parties? I did my part and voted today...gotta say...it felt pretty good!

SOMEONE ASKS ME TO PARTICIPATE IN PRAYER FOR ROMNEY TO WIN THE ELECTION

Praying for the opposite would also be a problem, but organized efforts for that seem markedly less common in these parts.

2 Down...

Can I just take a personal moment and pat myself on the back for reading 2 FULL books of the Bible. I mean...Genesis, check. Matthew, check. I didn't even cheat, or skip parts! Almost there with Exodus...I gotta say, I'm feeling pretty accomplished. 2 down, 64 more to go. Is that right, 66? I could sing my Wee Sing Bible Songs to find out...but for now, I'll guesstimate (also because I'm at work, and no one wants to hear the priests wife singing Bible songs alone in her cubicle...now THAT would be sad). I know 2 full books may not seem like much to some, but I've never sat down to attempt to read the Bible, so, if you are unimpressed...shu'up.

I'm also really impressed with the fact that I've already heard and remembered a lot of what we've read thus far. Sure, Genesis, Exodus and Matthew are pretty well-quoted books, but before I started, I was thinking, I am going to learn so many new things! And I haven't learned a damn NEW thing! Just kidding, I'm learning a lot.

Since I'm in deep in the Old Testament, I'm going to say something real quick (Warning and disclaimer: I am in no way formally educated on any of the things about to mentioned--they're simply my personal thoughts and wonderings). I have a hard time wondering how some faiths and some people can believe that the Bible is the word-for-word truth that is NOT to be questioned. Some think if you ask questions and therefore, presumably don't believe, you're, well...damned, literally...fire and eternal suffering and all that jazz, well, take that back, no jazz.

I suppose I'm one of those "The Bible is a collection of stories meant to teach us things and of course lots of the events really must have happened and of course Jesus lived and taught and empowered, and of course many Biblical events may have been accurate to that time and the way people lived then...", but to encourage others to either believe my way or go to hell...no says I. Who am I to tell people what's right and wrong and what the Bible really means? And frankly, who is anyone else to tell me what to believe. I like to question and wonder...that's what it all about, right? Starting the conversation? Making it not taboo? Accepting peoples differences?

Mainline Denomination Stereotypes: Episcopalian

Episcopalians that I've encountered (which is a lot) don't tend to lean heavily on judgement...contrary to the funny Tumblr image above. We don't tend to use or abuse those heavy words like 'born again' and 'saved'--that pop up so often here in the Bible Belt (ie the area below that looks like its got a rash). This Billboard is on the way to our lake house located in a really rashy part of the Bible belt...gotta love it.

I also (sarcastically) appreciate that this is the handiwork of a youth group. I also appreciate the feet coming out of heaven. Rapture=successful. Lastly, I appreciate that they knew it takes 5 minutes, not 1, not 6, 5..5 minute judgement. Also, "where will you be 5 minutes after you die" is not what they say in Hebrews 9:27. Just sayin'...BOOYAH SWEETGUM BAPTIST YOUTH!

Whatcha'll think? Agree? Disagree? Doesn't "born again" remind you of "Reborn" which reminds you of those creepy dolls that look like real babies...??? Don't believe me--CHECK THAT LINK. You might be sorry. See? Both equally creepy.
